Why are we doing this?

Because every child should experience joy, should feel the soft touch of someone who cares and can look beyond their disability. Some of these "children" are in their 30's and have not had the opportunity to do either since they have had little to no contact with the outside world.

The conditions these young people are forced to endure are unacceptable. Many of the residents spend their entire life in a bed with no toys and often no bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows, etc). All the while, the more mobile residents sit on the cement floor in the hallway throughout the day. If a child/adult is fortunate enough to have a wheelchair, they are often left stationary in a dim hallway all day. Residents of Agios Nektarios have been abandoned simply because they were born with a mental or physical impairment and have little, if any, connection to their family.

Some of their caretakers are loving people . Others are not. This is because of their lack of knowledge of the potential that lies within each of the residents. We are embarking on this journey to help not only the children by exposing them to music, arts and crafts, movement, sensory input and pure fun, but to also teach their caregivers to recognize what is locked inside these human beings and to begin to see that they are a part of the solution of making their lives more meaningful and happy.
